Romano Reviews: The Lego Batman Movie
The Lego Batman Movie, the text iteration of the beloved Lego Movie franchise, hit theatres on Monday. At $55.6 million for opening weekend, it has bested other premieres like 50 Shades Darker and John Wick 2. It was also certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, at a 91% approval rating, but Rotten Tomatoes has nothing on me so I present to you my review of The Lego Batman Movie.
All of my reviews follow a similar format. I will present three things I liked about the movie, three things that were total garbage, and then give it a completely irrelevant, arbitrary, and ambiguous rating. So let's start.
The Good:
1. Really Understood the History and Legend of Batman
As a long time Batman fan, I expected this movie to be a parody of the current Batman tropes, like the Dark Knight voice and Batman v Superman’s flop. It briefly touched on those things, but it delved so much more into the character. The movie referenced all of the character’s history since Detective Comics #27 (the first issue of Batman).
2. Extremely Funny for Kids and Adults
When you go see it, it will be obvious that this movie is for kids, but that doesn’t mean adults can’t enjoy it. Kids will enjoy the stupid kid humor, but adults will really enjoy the parody of the Batman tropes and mythos.
3. It Actually had a Really Interesting Plot and Mature Themes
You would think that a kid’s movie would be fairly simple, but the Lego franchise has proven that it can deal with some serious stuff as well as tell a pretty good story. Without spoiling anything, the movie takes the story of Batman, and uses it to explain themes like loss, suffering, and even an inability to trust and connect with people. The plot is fairly unique and was never boring.
The Total Garbage:
1. It isn’t Funny if You Aren’t a Batman Fan
I thought it was very funny throughout, but the content is very Batman related, so people, who don’t know Batman very well will have a tough time enjoying this. I saw it with a few people, who weren’t big Batman fans and they did not laugh very much at all.
2. You probably should see The Lego Movie first
It does pretty well as a stand-alone move, but it does reference info from the Lego Movie that’s kind of important to understand the Universe a little better.
3. It was better than Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
This isn’t a bad thing for Lego Batman, but it makes me very angry that Lego understands the source material for Batman better the DC does. You’ve got to be kidding me. Get these guys on board for the DCEU.
